The Gospel of John presents the Lord Jesus Christ as the eternal Son of God and as “the Word”. In John ch 1 v1& 2 he said, “in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God”. He uses this title on four occasions each one directing us to a specific location. In the verse above he directs us to heaven and the pre-incarnate existence of the Son, along with the Father and the Holy Spirit. John ch 1 verse 18 says “no man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared Him.” And John 4 v 24 “God is a Spirit”
Paul said to Timothy in 1 Timothy ch 1 v17 “Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen”.
And in Romans 1 v 20 “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:”
These scriptures clearly show us that before any physical creation God dwells in eternity in spirit form. When He created man He made him in His own image. As there are three persons in the Godhead man has three parts to his being, he has a body, a soul and a spirit. The soul and spirit are invisible but nevertheless identifiable. The body is world conscious, it has five senses, five digits on each hand and foot and these can intelligently experience the physical world. The soul is self-conscious and apart from God no one knows a persons soul other that the individual who possesses it. The spirit of man is often associated with the heart – the seat of ones affections.
Because of Adams sin all men are born spiritually dead and need to be “quickened” by God - that is “born again by the Holy Spirit”.
In our world today there is very little evidence of people believing in the eternal God. Hebrews 11 v 6 says “But without faith it is impossible to please him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
What a wonderful Christmas it would be if you came to God believing that he is the one who can meet you in your need and save your soul.
Our second location of the person “the Word” is Bethlehem. John 1 v 14 reads “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
Every baby born is a miracle but Bethlehem reveals the greatest miracle of all, of God becoming incarnate. 1 Timothy 3 v 16 “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh”. Have you ever thought whose eyes were the first to see the Christ of God incarnate? It was Mary and Joseph! The one who had made the world in its entirety was afforded a manger in an outside place.
Luke ch 2 v 7 “And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.”
Do you have room in your life this Christmastime for the Christ of God?
Our third location of the Word is in Galilee in 1 John 1 v 1 & 2 “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;).” John rehearses his experience with other disciples when they first heard the words of the Saviour at the Sea of Galilee “follow me”. They heard him, they saw and beheld him and handled him and for them he became the word of life. What a difference Christ makes to every person who is obedient to the Lords commands to follow him. For those disciples it was life giving and life changing as it can be for you today. Those men could never have dreamed where the Lord would lead them, for them it was life with a capital L and ultimately led them to Heaven.
Our final location of the Word is the Mount of Olives. Revelation 19 v 11 – 13 “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood; and his name is called The Word of God.” This scripture tells us who will be coming. Zechariah ch 14 v 3 & 4 tells us where he is coming to, it says, “Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.”
At his first coming they crucified him as King of the Jews. At his second coming he is the Word of God and will come as King of Kings.
At this Christmas time, is he your sovereign Lord?
God bless,
