Why you will need the Bible in 2019

The Bible is the world’s best selling book. It doesn’t need any one to defend it. It is the word of God and as such is powerful and effective without human intervention. The bible claims to be able to ‘discern the thoughts and intents  of the heart,’ Hebrews 4:12. It also stated that it is ‘able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus,’ 2 Timothy 3:15.

Here are some comments famous people have made about the Bible:

                                                              John Quincy Adams
"So great is my veneration for the BIBLE that the earlier my children begin to read it, the more confident will be my hope that they will prove useful citizens to their country and respectable members of society"

"I have made it a practice for several years to read the BIBLE through in the course of every year.  I usually devote to this reading the first hour after I rise every morning”

James W. Alexander
"The study of God’s Word, for the purpose of discovering God's will,  is the secret discipline which has formed the greatest characters"

Charles L. Allen
"In the BIBLE there are three distinctive meanings of grace;  It means the mercy and active love of God; It means the winsome attractiveness of God. It means the strength of God to overcome"

Matthew Arnold
"To the BIBLE men will return; and why?  Because they cannot do without it"

Francis Bacon
[English statesman and writer, 1597]
Called the BIBLE:  "The Book of "God's Word"

"What can I do with respect to the next world without my Bible?"

Henry Ward Beecher
"The BIBLE is God’s chart for you to steer by, to keep you from the bottom of the sea, and to show you where the harbour is, and how to reach it without running on rocks and bars"

Sir William Blackstone
"The BIBLE has always been regarded as part of the Common Law of England"

David Josiah Brewer
"No nation is better than its sacred book. In that book are expressed its highest ideals of life, and no nation rises above those ideals.  No nation has a sacred book to be compared with ours.  This American nation from its first settlement at Jamestown to the present hour is based upon and permeated by the principles of the BIBLE. The more this BIBLE enters into our national life the grander and purer and better will that life become"

Phillip Brooks
"The BIBLE shows how the world progresses.  It begins with a garden, but ends with a holy city"

William Jennings Bryan
"The BIBLE holds up before us ideals that are within sight of the weakest and the lowliest, and yet so high that the best and the noblest are kept with their faces turned ever upward.  It carries the call of the Saviour to the remotest corners of the earth;  on its pages are written the assurances of the present and our hopes for the future"

John Burton
"Holy BIBLE, Book Divine,
Precious Treasure,
Thou art mine;
Mine to teach me whence I came,
Mine to teach me what I am"

Thomas Carlyle
"The BIBLE is the truest utterance that ever came by alphabetic letters from the soul of man, through which, as through a window divinely opened,  all men can look into the stillness of eternity,  and discern in glimpses their far-distant, long-forgotten home"

George Washington Carver
"The secret of my success?  It is simple.  It is found in the BIBLE,

"In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths"

Richard Cecil
"Time can take nothing from the BIBLE.  It is the living monitor.  Like the sun,  it is the same in its light and influence to man this day which it was years ago.  It can meet every present inquiry and console every present loss"

"The history of all the great characters of the BIBLE is summed up in this one sentence: They acquainted themselves with God,  and acquiesced in His will in all things"

"The BIBLE resembles an extensive garden, where there is a vast variety and profusion of fruits and flowers,  some of which are more essential or more splendid than others;  but there is not a blade suffered to grow in it which has not its use and beauty in the system"

William Ellery Channing
"The incongruity of the BIBLE with the age of its birth;  its freedom from earthly mixtures;  its original, unborrowed, solitary greatness;  the suddenness with which it broke forth amidst the general gloom;  these,  to me, are strong indications of its Divine descent.  I cannot reconcile them with a human origin"

Salmon P. Chase
"There came a time in my life when I doubted the divinity of the Scriptures, and I resolved as a lawyer and a judge I would try the Book as I would try anything in the courtroom, taking evidence for and against.  It was a long, serious and profound study and using the same principles of evidence in this religious matter as I always do in secular matters, I have come to the decision that the BIBLE is a supernatural Book,  that it has come from God in short, with the moral and intellectual cultivation of the species, always supporting and often leading the way"

"Pile them,  if you will, on the left side of your study table;  but place your own Holy BIBLE on the right side -- all by itself,  all alone -- and with a wide gap between them.   For ... there is a gulf between it and the so-called books of the East which severs the one from the other utterly, hopelessly, and forever ... a veritable gulf which cannot be bridged over by any science of religious thought"

Charles Colson
"The BIBLE -- banned, burned, beloved.  More widely read, more frequently attacked than any other book in history. Generations of intellectuals have attempted to discredit it,  dictators of every age have outlawed it and executed those who read it.  Yet soldiers carry it into battle believing it more powerful than their weapons.  Fragments of it smuggled into solitary prison cells have transformed ruthless killers into gentle saints"
.
Christopher Columbus
"It is hoped that bynby assistance,  some of the continents in the Ocean will be discovered ... for the Glory of God"

Joseph Cook
"Do you know a book that you are willing to put under your head for a pillow when you are dying?   Very well; that is the Book you want to study when you are living.  There is only one such Book in the world"

Calvin Coolidge
"The foundations of our society and our government rest so much on the teachings of the BIBLE that it would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be practically universal in our country"

Alexander Cruden
"All other Books are of little importance in comparison with the Holy Scriptures"

Albert Baird Cummins
"The empire of Caesar is gone;  the legions of Rome are smouldering in the dust;  the avalanches of Napoleon hurled upon Europe have melted away, the prince of the Pharaohs is fallen;  the pyramids they raised to be their tombs are sinking every day in the desert sands; Tyre is a rock for bleaching fisherman's nets;  Sidon has scarcely left a wreck behind;  but the Word of still survives:   All things that threatened to extinguish it have only aided it;  and it proves every day how transient is the noblest monument that men can build, how enduring is the least Word that God has spoken"

The Defender
"Other books were given for our information,  the BIBLE was given for our transformation"

Cecil B. DeMille
"After more than sixty years of almost daily reading of the BIBLE,  I never fail to find it always new and marvellously in tune with the changing needs of every day"

Ernest von Dobschutz
"There is a small book: one can put it in one's pocket,  and yet all the libraries of America, numerous as they are, would hardly be large enough to hold all the books which have been inspired by this one little volume. The reader will know what I am speaking of;  it is the BIBLE, as we are used to call it -- the Book, the book of mankind, as it has properly been called"

Timothy Dwight

"We all therefore have to face this ultimate and final question:  Do we accept the BIBLE as the Word of God, as the sole authority in all matters of faith and practice, or do we not?  Is the whole of my thinking governed by Scripture, or do I come with my reason and pick and choose out of Scripture and sit in judgment upon it, putting myself and modern knowledge forward as the ultimate standard and authority?  The issue is crystal clear.  Do I accept Scripture as a revelation from God, or do I trust to speculation, human knowledge, human learning,  human understanding and human reasons.  Or, putting it still more simply, Do I pin my faith to, and subject all my thinking to,  what I read in the BIBLE?  Or do I defer to modern knowledge, to modern learning, to what people think today, to what we know at this present time which was not known in the past?  It is inevitable that we occupy one or the other of those two positions."

"The most learned, acute, and diligent student cannot, in the longest life, obtain an entire knowledge of the BIBLE.  The more deeply he works the mine, the richer and more abundant he finds the ore."

When the poet and novelist, Sir Walter Scott, lay dying, he said to his son-in-law, Lockhart, "Son, please bring me the Book. "The son-in-law was a bit uncertain because Walter Scott had a large library, so he replied, "Sir, which book?  Which book?" The dying saint answered immediately, "My son, there is just one Book.  Bring me the Book."  At once Lockhart went to the library and returned with Sir Walter's BIBLE.  Yes, there is but one Book!

"Here then, is the real problem of our negligence.  We fail in our duty to study God's Word not so much because it is difficult to understand, no so much because it is dull and boring, but because it is work.  Our problem is not a lack of intelligence or lack of passion. Our problem is that we are lazy."

R.A. Torrey
"It is clear that there must be difficulties for us in a revelation such as the BIBLE.  If someone were to hand me a book that was as simple to me as the multiplication table, and say, 'This is the Word of God.  In it He has revealed His whole will and wisdom,'  I would shake my head and say, 'I cannot believe it;  that is too easy to be a perfect revelation of infinite wisdom.'  There must be, in any
complete revelation of God's mind and will and character and being;  things hard for the beginner to understand;  and the wisest and best of us are but beginners."

A.W. Tozer
"The Bible was written in tears; and to tears it yields its best treasures."

"I have read many books, but the BIBLE reads me"

"As believers we understand the importance of the BIBLE.  It is God's inspired, infallible, inerrant Word.  It is authoritative in all matters to which it speaks, for it is the very Word of the Almighty God of the universe.  It is not enough, however, to speak of its importance. We must learn to read it, study it, memorize it and apply it to our lives.  When it comes to studying the Word of God it is important that we handle the text correctly so that we "rightly divide the Word of Truth." (II Timothy 2:15).

"The BIBLE is the only Book by which you may know certainly the future;  It is the only Book that satisfactorily answers the questions, 'Where did I come from?  Why am I here?  Where am I going?"

"Many things in the BIBLE I cannot understand;  many things in the BIBLE I only think I understand;  but there are many things in the BIBLE I cannot misunderstand"

"The BIBLE [the Holy word of God]  is the cornerstone of Liberty"

Henry Van Dyke
"Born in the East and clothed in Oriental form and imagery, the BIBLE walks the ways of all the world with familiar feet and enters land after land to find its own everywhere.  It has learned to speak in hundreds of languages to the heart of man.  Children listen to its stories with wonder and delight, and wise men ponder them as parables of life. The wicked and proud tremble at its warnings, but to the wounded, and penitent it has a mother's voice. It has woven itself into our dearest dreams;  so that love, friendship, sympathy, devotion, memory, hope, put on the beautiful garments of its treasured speech.  No man is poor or desolate who has this treasure for his own. When the landscape darkens, and the trembling pilgrim comes to the Valley named of the Shadow, he is not afraid to enter;  he takes the rod and staff of Scripture in his hand;  he says to friend and comrade; 'Goodbye;  we shall meet again;', and, confronted by that support, he goes toward the lonely pass as one who walks through darkness into light."

Queen Victoria  - to an African Prince
"Tell your prince that this Book (the BIBLE) is the secret of England's greatness"

"That Book (the BIBLE) accounts for the supremacy of England"

Rick Wade
"Our evaluation of the BIBLE and other "holy books" is governed by the recognition that the BIBLE is the inspired Word of God.  If God's final Word is found in what we call the BIBLE, then no other book can be God's Word.  To differ with what the Bible says is to
differ with God."

George Washington
"It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the BIBLE"

"The smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules or order and right, which Heaven itself ordained"

Daniel Webster
"If there is anything in my thoughts or style to commend, the credit is due my parents for instilling in me an early love of the Scriptures.  If we abide by the principles taught in the BIBLE, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity"

"The moral principles and precepts contained in the Scriptures ought to form the basis of  all our civil constitutions and laws.

All the miseries and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice, oppression, slavery, and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting the precepts contained in the BIBLE"

"The BIBLE is the chief moral cause of all that is good, and the best corrector of all that is evil, in human society; the best Book for regulating temporal concerns of men, and the only Book that can serve as an infallible guide to future felicity"

John Wesley
"This Book (the BIBLE)  had to be written by one of three people:  good men, bad men or God.  It couldn't have been written by good men because they said it was inspired by the revelation of G-D.  Good men don't lie and deceive. It couldn't have been written by  bad men because bad men would not write something that would condemn themselves. It leaves only one conclusion. It was given by divine inspiration of God.

Woodrow Wilson
