Wonderfully Made - Part 6 - The Cells

Our fifth and final subject for study in the series is the cells, the basic building blocks of our bodies. There are an awful lot of them, about 40 trillion (million million), with a mere 35 billion, thousand million, skin cells, and around two billion cells in our hearts. 

There are about 200 different kinds of cell, including blood, muscle, skin, nerve, glandular cells, etc. Half our cells are taken up by red blood cells.

Our cells vary in size, but are all too small to see with the naked eye. They do not last for ever, but most of them are slowly regenerating, so that we have:

·     a new set of taste buds every ten days

·     new skin every month

·     new nails every 6 – 10 months

·     new bones every ten years and even 

·     a new heart every 20 years

That is to say that every single cell in our hearts is replaced by a brand new cell over a period of twenty years. We need this regeneration to survive!

Cells provide structure for our bodies; they group together to form tissues, which in turn group together to form organs, such as our hearts and brains. 

Although cells in different organs are different, e.g., 

·     Stem cells        

·     Red blood cells (erythrocytes)

·     White blood cells (leukocytes)

·     Platelets

·     Nerve cells (neurons)

·     Neuroglial cells

·     Muscle cells (myocytes)

·     Cartillage cells (chondrocytes)

·     Bone cells

·     Skin cells

·     Endothelial cells

·     Epithelial cells

·     Fat cells (adipocytes)

The basic properties of all cells are just the same. 

There is a spiritual lesson here, for although there are many things that make us different, there are some things that make us all exactly the same. 

In God’s sight, we are all the same in that we are all sinners, but still responsible to God - Romans 3. 23 'For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God'.

God has commanded us all to believe on His Son, Jesus Christ as Saviour - Acts 17:30-31 'And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead'.
