Patience is a virtue, possess it if you can...

‘But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth’

Psalm 86:15

I would challenge any Christian to deny that God is consistently patient. I think however that most would admit that they have been impatient with God and stressed with things that are going on in our lives. Amazingly, God still works with us and looks out for us even when we are not too happy with him.

David, the psalmist, had many experiences with God. He must have been frustrated at times that God was (in his eyes) slow to put in place the things that he had promised. For example no one is quite sure how many years elapsed between God promising David that he would be King and the date of his kingdom being established. It could have been about fifteen years. This was a long time to wait especially when the current King had lost sight of what he had been called to do. He was jealous of David and more intent on destroying him than ruling his country well. As we read the psalms of David we can see a man who has a vision for God’s glory and honour and seeks to serve God well. God however has a plan and sticks to it.

In a similar vein, Abraham had to wait for God to fulfil his promise of a son and heir for about twenty five years. God is patient in this respect as well. He does nothing at the wrong time; His timing is perfect.

When you can’t see everything that is going on it is hard at times to cope. Our limited understanding makes us impatient. Maybe you feel God has directed you and led you and yet things are not where you think they should be yet. Try to learn to trust in our patient God. He is patient and will do every at the right time.
