A little light reflection!

‘This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all’

1 John 1. 5

When you stop and think about it, it would be a very strange thing to say about anyone - ‘you are light’. We might say ‘so and so is kind, patient’ and so on but to say someone is light is very odd indeed. When you bring in the fact that we are talking about God it makes more sense. It is not however until you stop and consider the character of God that you really get a feel for what it means?

Let’s think about it at a very basic level. Light is a source of energy and produces life. Life is not possible without light. So in this context God being described as light is helpful. He is the source of all life and energy, John 1. 3, Col. 1. 15-17. Bear in mind this is not philosophical stuff but the factual revelation of God in the Bible.

On the day of creation God ‘commanded the light to shine out of darkness,’ 2 Cor. 4. 6, and when a person becomes a Christian God ‘shines in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ,’ 2 Cor. 4. 6.

What else can we learn from light?
  • Light exposes things.
  • Light can be used to find out where you are, your condition or situation.
  •  Light can show you the right way to go.
  • Light can prevent you making progress by blinding you and restricting your progress.
  • Light can simply be a display of beauty, majesty and glory.

A quick search through the Bible will provide examples where God is seen illustrating the points above. For instance think about light preventing you from making progress by blinding you. In Acts 9.3 a light from heaven shone round about Saul of Tarsus. It was in fact the Lord Jesus speaking to him from heaven. What an encounter that was.

I trust that today you will live in the light of his presence.
