Scripture Reading - Acts 6. 1-7
Key Verse - Acts 6.4 ‘And the word of God increased and the number of the disciples multiplied’
When you woke this morning were you
grumpy? Did
it make you cross when
someone else had something that you
wanted? We can all
be a bit like this at
times! It’s better not to be, but it
In our bible reading today some of the
ladies in
the church in Jerusalem were
feeling unhappy. I am not surprised. They
were sad
because their husbands had died!
Ladies whose husbands have died are
known as
‘widows’. Imagine how lonely they
must be! These ladies in Jerusalem were
probably afraid as well! In Bible times many
ladies didn’t have money of their
own. If
they became a widow then buying things
would be difficult. How would
she pay the
bills and buy food to eat?
It was a bit different for Christian widows, as
believers
in each church were told to make
sure that they were being looked after. But
things don’t always go smoothly! People
often argue and sometimes people from
different countries don’t trust each other. In
Jerusalem there was a big argument
between the Greek Christians and the
Jewish Christians. The Greeks
said that the
Jewish widows were being looked after
better then their widows. There
was a lot of
complaining for a while! Christians should
try not to argue and
complain but when they
do they should sort things out and say sorry.
Many of Jesus’ disciples still lived in
Jerusalem
at that time. They heard about
what was happening and decided to sort it
out. Seven
really good men got the job of
making sure everyone was well looked after.
They
did a great job and everyone ended up
happy.
Have a think about how you could help
people who
are lonely or in need of some
love and care. Your actions could show
them how
much God cares!
