The journey was very easy. My wife drove me to Lime Street Station in the centre of Liverpool. I got on the train, found my seat and settled down for a couple of hours of emails, reading, phone calls, etc. At precisely 1400, we pulled into Euston in central London.
Once I was out of the train, I made my way to the underground. I moved with the crowds in and out of underground trains until I was at Cannon Street Station. I then rose from the 'bowels of the earth' to stand in the bright light of the day and found myself facing platform 3, from which my overland train would leave. The Abbey Wood area of London was my ultimate destination. I arrived there safe and sound. The journey was over.
At each stage, I was comfortable and dry, could access food and had the use of a loo. I can't complain as the journey was easy.
Let me tell you about someone else who made a journey under very different circumstances. His name is Jesus.
He left heaven to come to earth. The world he left was so magnificent I cannot find words to describe it. Revelation 21, in the Bible, gives us a taste of what it must have been like. It is described as having no death, 'neither sorrow, nor crying'. It is an amazing place that reflects the glory of God.
Jesus left that place willingly to come to earth to deal with our sins. The apostle Paul writes in Philippians 2:7 about the journey of the Son of God - 'but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men'.
If you have turned to Philippians 2, read on - 'And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross'. My journey was nothing compared to this.
The Lord Jesus Christ came to earth, took manhood and endured the death of the cross so that we could have forgiveness, salvation and be right with God. What humility and grace.
But that's not the end; Philippians continues: 'Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father'.
